August 11 - Scotland (part 3)
From Hilton Grand Vacations to Dunnottar Castle
After deciding not to have breakfast at the hotel, we checked out and thought we would find some food along the way. It was a long long time …
We made our way to Dunnottar Castle. The Castle was built in around the 1400s and was on an outcrop. The surviving buildings are largely of the 15th and 16th centuries. Dunnottar is best known as the place where the Honours of Scotland, the Scottish crown jewels, were hidden from Oliver Cromwell's invading army in the 17th century.
An amazing thing was that they had stables up there. How they got the horses up there was quite a feat – there was really no easy way that we could see. The views from here were spectacular.
Dunnottar Castle to Arbroath Abbey
Next we made our way to Arbroath Abbey. The Abbey was associated with the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath, believed to have been drafted by Abbot Bernard, who was the Chancellor of Scotland under King Robert I.
After a short visit (finished around midday) we were still trying to find a place to have some breakfast. On the way to St Andrews, we came across a Maccas. Given we were now beyond the point of hungry we decided to stop in and have some lunch. It was typical Maccas.
We continued on the journey to St Andrews to have a bit of a look. The place was packed, but we eventually found a car park. We headed into the shop to see what they had. There was no time to play a round (plus they need to be booked months in advance) so we simply had a quick look around.
St Andrews to Scottish Deer Farm (not factory)
After St Andrews we started the journey back to Milnathort to my Aunt and Uncles place. Along the way we came across a Scottish Deer Farm. I kept referring to it as a factory, woops. We had a look around as they were feeding some of the animals (wolves, bears and foxes). It was an interesting little place.
Milnathort and dinner out
We got back to Milnathort around 5pm. By this time we were exhausted so a little lay down was in order. Shortly after, my Aunt and Uncle returned from work. So we had a bit of a chat and worked out where we wanted to go for dinner.
Dinner was in Kinross at a local pub there. The meals were really good – although it did take some time for Ros to decide what she wanted. Her choices were influenced by what she saw coming out of the kitchen.
After dinner we went back to the house and chatted about where we have been, where we are going to next and future plans.
